Less than a century ago the whole Ukraine was a unique country of wooden architecture with many hundreds of wooden churches situated from the Carpathians to the plains of eastern provinces. Though horribly ruined during the Soviet period, Ukrainian wooden church architecture is a part of European cultural space. It is the easternmost territory with Christian wooden structures while about 30 wooden churches of the province of Champagne in France mark the westernmost area.
